Granola Bar Cereal

If you like Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bars, you will love the new Nature Valley Crunchy 100% Natural cereal. The cereal is essentially made up of the granola bar pieces along with crisp rolled oats and lightly toasted multigrain flakes.

Once again, the Boom This! Test Kitchen was asked for a review of the cereal. How would Baby Boomers accept this new edition to the already overcrowded cereal aisles?

We taste-tested the oats ‘n honey version of the cereal. (There is also a cinnamon cereal.) I found the cereal to be heavy on the sweet side, as did my colleague, and VERY crunchy. If you have had any amount of dental work -- and like many Baby Boomers, I have had more than my share -- the extra crispness might make you think before chewing on the flakes. But as with so many of these cereals, if you let them soak up a little milk or mix them in with yogurt, they soften up and are much easier on the teeth.

This is a low fat (3 grams per serving) cereal, but not low cal. There are 230 calories in a cup of cereal without adding anything to it. There are also 48 grams of carbs, and only 4 grams each of fiber and protein, maybe on the low side.

That said, when I sat down to write this review, I brought the box of cereal into my office so I could check out the nutritional panel. While writing, I nibbled on several bits of the cereal and found that it worked very nicely as a late afternoon snack.
