Empty Nest Syndrome: Bird Style

It’s finally quiet in my office today. I no longer have to play the Little River Band’s Greatest Hits album on high to drown out the sound of small birds chirping, non stop, during the daylight hours.

As I have written before, woodpeckers have been drilling holes large enough in our house’s exterior cedar siding to accommodate bird nests. This summer, two families moved into these bird-sized condos in the wall outside my home office (with still more living in carved-out holes outside our kitchen).

Needless to say the baby birds badgered their moms for more food by chirping constantly. But yesterday I noticed that there was --  finally -- blissful quiet in my office. The birds must have flown from the nest to begin their own journeys, leaving behind the damaged boards which need to be replaced  and splashes of bird droppings on the driveway.

Quiet, blessed quiet, for me and the mama birds.

A couple of years ago I had a similar experience with a nest of birds living on a rain spouting outside my office window. (Who says working at home is lonely?)
