Use Color to Brighten Black

Special to Boom This!

By Sarah Sudar of Looking Sharp!

Like most women, I buy everything in black.  From jackets and pants to purses and skirts, I always pick up black first before braving the other prints and patterns in the stores.  I can never have enough black t-shirts, dresses or shoes, I just can’t.

Black is timeless.  It will never go out of style and will always be the definition of chic and classy.  It is not only figure flattering, which we are so thankful for, but also the perfect canvas to style outfits for countless occasions.

From day to evening, office to opera and errands to dinner, a little black dress, trouser or pencil skirt can transform your look for multiple occasions with the addition of accessories.

Accessories are also the perfect way to try out the season’s latest trends without investing a lot of money.  Since trends come and go faster than I can write about them, accessories allow you to test out trends to see if they fit your personal style before fully committing.

Carrying a great bag is such a simple accessory because it can totally transform your look without taking a big risk.  You're more than likely to carry a lime green leather clutch than wear the lime green suit! -- Shana Luther, handbag designer.

The following accessories are sure to help you get multiple uses out of your black wardrobe pieces with a touch of modern flare.

  • Statement Jewelry:  Wearing a single matching bracelet and necklace is a thing of the past.  Think large chunky necklaces and multiple bracelets that are far from matching.  Layering necklaces of different lengths, colors and shapes can make for a dramatic neckline.  For the arm, pair multiple bracelets on a single wrist.

  • Cardigans and wraps: Neon is a huge color for fall.  As seen on many of the fall designs, such as Michael Kors, these highlighter-esque hues will have you standing out in a crowd.  Wear a wrap as a scarf with a pair of black trousers and a fitted denim jacket or add a casual boyfriend cardigan to a satin black party dress for a look that goes from day to night in no time.

  • Tights and Pantyhose:  Probably one of the simplest and most inexpensive ways to wear trends is to add legwear.  Fish-net pantyhose were once considered risqu. Now-a-days, fishnets are part of the trend in legware that comes in a wide variety of patters, prints, colors and textures.  This is one of my favorite ways to dress up a skirt or dress.

  • Shoes and handbags:  Honestly, these two don’t have to match.  Nothing says sexy like a great simple black pump, but when looking for ways to go beyond black, pick shoes that scream character and sass.  With handbags, look for bold colors, embellishments, and metallics in unique shapes, even if they are sometimes only big enough to carry a tube of lipstick and some cash.

Accessorize with bright neon, metallic or wild animal prints to turn your timeless black staples into modern formations without breaking the bank.
