Budgeting for the Holidays

It’s still hot and humid here today, and rainy, very rainy. But we Boomers know that cooler temperatures are around the bend and that can only mean one thing -- the holidays. (I know, we just skipped over Halloween, and Thanksgiving etc. but there’s a point here).

Now’s the time to budget for the holidays so you don’t find yourself up to your boots in unpaid bills in January for gifts you  can’t even remember giving.

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Prepare a budget for how much you want to spend on gifts and stick to it.

  • Shop early (now) and hit the sales. People who have their holiday shopping done in the summer are annoying, but then they get to enjoy themselves during the season while the rest of us run around willy nilly.

  • Limit your expenses as much as you can now (eating out, lattes, etc.) so you can save money for buying gifts later.

  • If you can, set aside cash for your gifts and don’t rely on credit cards to make purchases. It’s too easy to forget how much you have already charged on your card until it’s too late and the bills have arrived. Socking away some cash each week will make shopping less dangerous later.
