Urban Gardening

The following pictures were taken of a garden designed to hang on a fence in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh this past summer and fall. Jessica Jackson, a student at Carnegie Mellon University, designed the garden to hang from the spokes of the fence, located on Forbes Avenue, recycling used soda pop bottles as her containers. What resulted was a lush “green” spot on a busy city street that brightened the day of passers by.

The fence garden was created by Jessica for a university class project, and illustrated how a garden can grow -- in this instance vertically --  when there is not enough ground available.

The urban garden is a way of “greening the urban environment,” CMU art professor Bob Bingham said.  Hear, Hear.
